More Than An In-Law Suite

Luxury Kitchen Design

When a “boomer” client decided to co-purchase a home with her adult children and grandchild, we were tasked to repurpose a large and bland walkout basement space into a personable suite that would accommodate her future mobility and living in place desires. The goal of this project was to create a personality plus living, dining and meal preparation area within an open concept plan, including an adjacent full bathroom.

Style aesthetic for this space is a combination of earthy, rustic and cozy elements reflecting the owners love of industrial style. In keeping with this style, we decided to expose the ceiling which added height to the space. Cabinetry, small cooktop and combo microwave/convection, a beverage center and refrigeration conveniently occupies one wall with layers of LED under counter and toe kick lighting. A connecting island peninsula houses the sink, dishwasher, counter-top seating and meal prep. The counter backsplash is a combination of reflective metal subway tiles and up-cycled “stone” look cladding.

The living area showcases a live oak bar for additional seating and entertainment, which if needed in the future can be modified to an accessible chair height level. Non-skid luxury vinyl flooring is “foot friendly, durable and easy to maintain.

The highly functional universal design bathroom compliments the kitchen with transitional tones of gray and cream.  The custom height vanity includes a single vessel sink with and drawer and open base storage. The shower features on trend custom grab bars, storage niche and corner bench. All additional bathroom walls have been reinforced internally for future grab bar placement with a comfort height toilet.
